Overview

The Kakiya market (also written Al Kakiyyah, Kakiyah, Kakia, Kakiah or Souq Al-Kakiyah, and called Pasar Kakiyah in Indonesian) is the wholesale shopping centre of Makkah that many pilgrims visit for souvenirs and gifts. Indonesian media describe a three-storey building with 180 to 200 stalls on Ibrahim Al Khalil Road, about 8 km from the Grand Mosque, and have nicknamed it the “Tanah Abang of Makkah”. Prices are quoted in bulk and single items are also sold.

Which Kakiyah do you mean?

The name belongs to a district, and several different places in it are called Kakiyah, which is why searches give mixed results. The wholesale shopping centre for clothes, souvenirs and gifts is the one on this page. A separate fruit, vegetable and dates market operates in the same district, about 9 km from the Haram and about 15 minutes by car, and it is described on our page Al Kakiyyah Fruit and Vegetable Market. If you want dates, check both: the shopping centre sells packed dates as gifts, while the haraj sells fresh fruit and dates by weight.

What you can buy

  • Abayas, gamis, hijabs and other clothing
  • Prayer rugs and prayer beads
  • Dates, sweets and chocolate; pistachio chocolate was popular with pilgrims in 2026
  • Perfume and oud
  • Toys, Arabic teapots and household gifts

Prices

Reported prices differ by year and shop. Indonesian reports from 2023 quote about 25 to 150 SAR for an adult abaya, 15 to 25 SAR for a turban and 70 to 100 SAR for a teapot with glasses; in 2026 one pilgrim reported paying 105 SAR for three gamis. Reports differ on whether it is cheaper than the shops near the Haram: some visitors find clear savings on bulk purchases, others found single items about the same, so compare a few shops before you buy.

Getting there

  • Hotel minibuses and coasters were reported in 2026 at about 30 SAR for a return trip, around 20 minutes each way.
  • Taxis and ride-hailing cars also go there; agree the price and the waiting time before you set off.

Opening hours

Each shop sets its own hours, and no common schedule is published. A group in May 2026 was reported shopping from about 08:00. Ask your hotel for the current hours on the day, and plan the trip outside the prayer times, when staff and drivers are less available.

Tips for visitors

  • Take cash in Saudi riyals in small notes (5, 10, 20 and 50 SAR); larger stores may accept cards.
  • Bargaining is normal, and buying several items from one stall usually brings a better price.
  • Many sellers speak basic Indonesian; some goods come from China or Bangladesh rather than Saudi Arabia, so ask about the origin if you want local products.
  • The centre is very crowded in the Hajj season; go in a group of three or four or with a guide.
