Pilgrim etiquette

Not just rules: each one protects someone — a child, an elder, you. Why it matters, what to do and what to avoid.

“No obscenity, no wickedness, no quarrelling in Hajj.” — al-Baqarah 2:197 — al-Baqarah 2:197

Millions share one space at the same time. Patience, cleanliness and care for others are part of the worship itself.

  • Respect

    Don’t film or take selfies

Keep the phone in your pocket during Tawaf and prayer.

Filming stops the flow behind you, distracts your own worship and shows other pilgrims without their consent. Photography rules inside the Two Holy Mosques are enforced by staff.

  • Crowds

    Follow security and staff

Their instructions are crowd safety, not opinion.

Staff see the whole crowd on cameras and radio; you see only the people around you. A closed gate or a detour usually prevents a crush you cannot see.

  • Crowds

    Don’t stop in the flow

Pray, rest and make dua away from passages.

One person stopping in a packed Mataf creates a wave of pressure behind them. Most crowd injuries begin with a sudden stop.

  • Crowds

Don’t push at the Black Stone

Point to it from afar — the Sunnah is complete.

Touching the Black Stone is Sunnah; harming a Muslim is forbidden. Raising your right hand towards it with “Allahu Akbar” at each round fully counts.

  • Respect

    Patience with others

No arguments, no raised voices — give way to the elderly.

Allah says about Hajj: “no obscenity, no wickedness, no quarrelling” (al-Baqarah 2:197). Millions from different cultures share one space — patience is part of the worship itself.

  • Respect

    No waste (israf)

Take as much Zamzam and food as you will use.

Wasting water and food is disliked in Islam, and in the heat of Makkah every bottle and meal was prepared for someone. Leftovers attract insects and make floors slippery.

  • Safety

    Found someone’s bag?

Don’t open it — hand it to staff or Lost & Found.

In the Haram lost property may be picked up only to return it. A bag may hold a passport, medicine or money someone cannot travel without.

  • Safety

    Lost a child or companion

Agree a meeting point and use ID bracelets.

With millions in one space, phones often fail. A fixed meeting point and an ID with a phone number reunite most families within an hour.

  • Safety

    Protect yourself from the sun

Umbrella, water every 20 minutes, avoid 11:00–16:00.

Makkah reaches 45–47 °C in summer. The Ministry of Health says an umbrella lowers the temperature around you by about 10 °C. Heat exhaustion builds slowly — by the time you feel dizzy you are already dehydrated.

  • Emergencies

    Need a doctor or hospital

Call 997 for an ambulance; there are clinics inside the Haram.

Emergency stabilisation is provided to everyone; the visa’s health insurance covers follow-up care. Ambulances and clinics operate around the clock inside the Haram and at the holy sites. Knowing the numbers in advance saves the minutes that matter.

  • Emergencies

    If someone dies

Stay calm, inform staff and the agency — the janazah is arranged.

Many see dying in the Haram as a blessing, and there is a set procedure. Families are often far away, so the group and the agency take the first steps.

  • Cleanliness

    Don’t eat inside the mosque

Dates and Zamzam only — meals outside.

Food on the carpets attracts insects and stains the place where millions prostrate. In Ramadan iftar is served only in marked areas.

  • Cleanliness

    Don’t litter

Keep a small bag for your trash.

Cleanliness is half of faith. Thousands of cleaners work around the clock, but litter in a crowd becomes a slip and trip hazard.

  • Cleanliness

    Shoes: bag, not floor

Carry them in a bag or use the numbered shelves.

Shoes left at the doors pile up into a trip hazard and are cleared by staff — and a lost pair means walking barefoot on 50 °C marble.
